Nissan LEAF Named 2026 WWCOTY Supreme Winner

The automotive world is celebrating a major milestone as the 2026 Nissan LEAF has been named the Supreme Winner of the 2026 Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year (WWCOTY) awards. This prestigious recognition highlights the LEAF’s continued leadership in the electric vehicle segment and its ability to meet the needs of modern drivers around the globe.

Announced during the week of International Women’s Day, the award carries extra significance as it reflects the perspectives of women in the automotive industry — a field where female voices have historically been underrepresented.

“New LEAF being named overall winner by the Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year is a proud moment for everyone at Nissan,” said Ivan Espinosa, President & CEO, Nissan. “LEAF helped bring electric driving into the mainstream, and this new generation carries that mission forward. It’s designed to make going electric easier and more enjoyable for more people around the world.”

Recognized by a Global Panel of Women Automotive Experts

The Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year jury is made up of 86 automotive journalists from 55 countries across five continents, making it one of the most diverse automotive award panels in the world.

After months of testing and evaluation, the panel selected the Nissan LEAF as the overall Supreme Winner. Before claiming the top title, the vehicle first won its category as the best compact car, then went on to defeat several other category champions in the final round.

Competitors included vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz CLA, Hyundai Ioniq 9, Toyota 4Runner, and even the Lamborghini Temerario.

Why the Nissan LEAF Stood Out

The jury praised the LEAF for its practicality, affordability, and user-friendly electric driving experience. These qualities have long been central to the model’s success, helping introduce millions of drivers to electric mobility.

Key attributes that impressed the judges included:

  • Smooth and quiet electric performance

  • Excellent efficiency, especially for urban and suburban driving

  • Spacious interior and intuitive technology

  • Accessible pricing compared to many EV competitors

The latest version of the LEAF also offers an estimated range of up to 303 miles on a full charge, making it an appealing option for drivers transitioning to electric vehicles. According to WWCOTY leadership, the LEAF represents a “mature and intelligent vision of electrification”, focusing on real-world usability rather than overly complex solutions.

A Symbolic Win Around International Women’s Day

The timing of the award announcement — around International Women’s Day — reinforces the mission of the WWCOTY organization. The awards were created to ensure women’s perspectives are represented in automotive journalism and vehicle evaluation. Importantly, the award does not select vehicles specifically for women. Instead, the jury evaluates cars using the same criteria any driver would consider, including safety, comfort, efficiency, technology, and value.

Continuing the LEAF’s Legacy

Since its original launch, the Nissan LEAF has been one of the world’s most influential electric vehicles. It helped make EVs more accessible to everyday drivers and demonstrated that electric mobility can be practical, efficient, and affordable.

With its latest generation, the LEAF continues to push the EV movement forward while staying true to its mission: bringing electric driving to the mainstream.

The 2026 recognition as Supreme Winner of the Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year further reinforces the LEAF’s reputation as one of the most balanced and user-friendly electric vehicles available today.
